THE CIRCUS Artist’s Name: Georges Seurat Date and Place of Birth: He was born in Paris. Artistic Influences: He was influenced by the Impressionists. Picasso, Braque, Matisse, and perhaps dozens of other artists of this century were influenced by Seurat. Artistic Style: He set about trying to duplicate the avant-garde color of the Impressionists. He pushed Impressionist color theory into the realm of scientific experimentation, breaking new ground with his tiny points of color with every stroke. Though stiff, formal, and stylized, the work literally shimmered with light as the tiny dots of color did things to the viewer's eyes no painting had ever done before. His painting moved closer to Cubism and abstraction. What I Think of His Work: I think it has nice, bright colors and it looks like it is actually moving. It looks like there are actually shadows, it looks amazing!
