What is One-Day G.A.T.E.?

Students experiment with different types of soil to determine water retention ability.

The One-Day  Program is designed for students who have qualified for G.A.T.E. but have chosen to remain at their home schools rather than attend G.A.T.E. full time at Bessie Owens.  These students are bused from their home schools one day per week to Bessie Owens Primary School, where the One-Day Program is housed.
The goal of the One-Day Program is to provide differentiated instruction focusing on depth, complexity, and novelty within the curriculum.  The main components of the One-Day program are in the areas of Science, Language Arts, Geography and Current Events, Spanish, Computer Technology, and the Arts.  Math is also taught in conjunction with other subjects, mainly Science. Students are given the opportunity to work in the Computer Lab for 45 minutes to one hour each week and a fully equipped Science Lab is available for our use.
The teachers also incorporate Leadership, Scholarliness, and Independent and Creative Thinking into the students' daily activities.  Teachers choose a Universal Theme such as Patterns or Systems that students are required to analyze and use in their daily activities, and students learn about and apply Depth, Complexity, and Novelty to their learning, especially within their Differentiated Learning Centers and in researching and writing their Scholarly Investigation Project.  Field trips to the Bakersfield Museum of Art are taken two to three times yearly and an out of town study trip is taken once a year, usually to culminate a specific area of study.  Students also attend plays and musical presentations at other schools and at the Education Center.  Individual teachers also arrange other study trips designed to enhance student learning.
The teachers in the One-Day Program are Mrs. Karen Girardi, grades 3/4, Mrs. Ann Barrios, grades 4/5, and Ms. Pamela Tarango, grades 5/6.  The three teachers work very closely together and each have developed Web Sites so that parents may be kept apprised of their child's learning.
