Students enjoyed breath-taking views at Montana de Oro State Beach

in the Spring of 2006 for our out-of-town study trip!

Our study trip focused on different aspects of Oceanography, as well as the geological formations caused by erosion, such as sea arches, sea caves, sea stacks and sea cliffs.

Walking along the bluffs, we were able to see evidence of millions of years of erosion as layers of of Monterey Shale came into view.  These are known as "marine terraces".  Near the unstable coast of this continent the Pacific Plate grinds against the North American Plate.  This action has buckled and tilted the sedimentary layers, raising them out of the sea.

We also spent time down at Coralina Cove searching for sea life among the small pools of water.  Unfortunately, it was high tide so not many creatures were being cooperative!
