Counselor’s Corner

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to all of our "Brillian Bobcat students, familyes & staff!  Thank you for all of your donations of canned food items.  This is a great way to model ethical values of Caring, Sharing, Citizenship & Responsibility for others.  Especially for those families that were in need this holiday season.  All donations were given to the Salvation Army and we hope to continue the tradition next year.

I look forward to meeting you and working with your student(s) as needed. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at the school @ 631-5420 or you can reach me via email at barrerab@bcsd.com.  I will be happy to work with you to ensure a successful school year for your student(s).

CHARACTER EDUCATION

During the 2007-2008 school year, we will continue our focus on Character Education which promotes ethical values.  We will teach & model the ability to discern right from wrong & the commitment to do what is right & proper.  The goal of Character Education is to develop positive attitudes, habits, instincts, & predispositions toward doing what is right because it is right, not because it is advantageous.

There are six ethical values which are called the “Six Pillars” of Character.  They are trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.  At school we will learn one pillar a month.  We ask for your support in promoting & reinforcing each “Pillar” at home with your student.  Remember that raising children & educating them is about developing good people who can live healthy, happy lives of purpose!  “It’s not what you have.  It’s not how you look.  It’s not whom or what you know that matters most.  What determines the course of life, & the quality of your society, is what kind of person you are.  It’s your character that counts”. - Focus on Character

The Pillar for the month of December is FAIRNESS.

              A fair person:

  • plays by the rules
  • takes turns and shares
  • keeps an open mind and listens to others
  • shows others that he or she is appreciated

The Pillar for the month of January is TRUSTWORTHINESS

  • Do you tell the truth?
  • Do you follow rules, even when no one is watching?
  • Do you keep your promise?

It is our goal to teach and model to our "Bobcat" students the ability to discern right from wrong and the commitment to do what is right and proper.

Although learning social skills is not an official part of the curriculum, it is a very important part of daily life.  Academics and social skills make for well rounded students.  It just make you feel good to do the "right" thing.

Congratulations to all of our Bobcat winners that have received awards for the second quarter.  Keep up the good work and remember the six pillars of character!

Thank you for your support in promoting character education at home with your student.

            Sincerely,

Mrs. Barrera, School Counselor
