STATE REPORTS
Room 31 is now presenting the 3rd grade G.A.T.E State Reports. Ms. Hancock class is very interesting with all the fun things we get to study. The state reports are becoming a very good experience for us. It is important to know about your 50 states. After all we are a nation of one. We are doing the states like Washington and Hawaii. We will cut the shape of our state out of card board and the cardboard should be 30 inches. On the cardboard we will draw our state bird, tree, and other symbols. We are also going to make a written report. Thanks for reading our part of the 31 Times Report.

NOVEL READINGS
Room 31 has read the novel, THE BEST SCHOOL YEAR EVER, and wants to follow the book. The book says to write a compliment and that is exactly what we did. Ms. Hancock says that it is really fun for the kids to experience it. She also says that she thinks that getting students excited and enthusiastic about reading is spectacular. As a child she hated to read, and she missed out on so many adventures. Reading is fun, and as a teacher her goal is to make that experience a wonderful one. WOW what a interview. This teacher is amazing. People say she has a big imagination. If you don’t keep on trying you will never reach your dreams. That’s what everybody says. By Sabrina Chao
Feelings about the Powwow
Most people think the powwow is going to be an exciting event and others said they thought it was going to be very educational. What I feel about the powwow is it will be awesome. I also think it’s going to be an excellent powwow because were going to participate in many different Indian activities.
Ms. Hancock said, “I’m looking forward to having the students exhibit their reports and villages. The students worked exceptionally hard on their projects and therefore I hope they will have a great time."

Science
In science we are looking at the moon every night. Even though some of us can’t see the moon. We are trying it at all cost. It is a test to see how the moon phases work. In other words, we are seeing are weights on other planets. Most of us were surprised at the results. We weighed the most on Jupiter. We weighed the least on Pluto. The way we figured out are weight. Is that we multiplied our weight on a sheet of paper. By Cymone Rugnao and Chloe Agerton
THE EDITORIAL Hi! My name is Fox Bennett. I am the co-editor of 31 DATELINE NEWS. I started the 31 DATELINE NEWS because my dad is a editor at the BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN and I would like to start a newspaper, like he works at one. I inspired the class by giving everyone an article to write and a paper was born! They seem to like it and it has helped me forefill my dream of making a class newspaper. Room 31’s Inspiration By Daniel Tweedy WIND WOLVES On the 13th of November, Ms. Hancock’s 3rd grade G.A.T.E class went on a field trip to Wind Wolves. They rode on bus 20 for an hour and 30 minutes. When room 31 got there, they took a tour. There tour guide was named Willie. Willie led them to different sights in Wind Wolves. The other tour guides told us about animals and the Wind Wolves rules. They also thought us why Wind Wolves is called Wind Wolves. It is called that because the grass moves in the wind and, it looks like wolves are running through it. They also warned us that settlers thought that wolves are dangerous so they killed every wolf in California. First we went down a small path. Then we went across small wobbly bridge. We soon got to a place where we played the games that the Chumash and Yokuts played. Then we played the instrument. We soon got to a sight and at that sight we made paint brushes out of Yucca stems. Then we painted our face with Indian face paint. Then we went to a place were we tried plant foods that the Indians ate or cooked with. The next stop was a small opening between trees. We learned how the Indians fished and hunted. We had two stations. One was you threw sticks at a bunnie. The second station was you had a long stick and you would throw it at a ball that was made out of willow poles. The ball had a small hole. You would throw the stick and try to get it in the hole. This was one of the Indians practices of hunting. Room 31 has read The Landry News. It is a story about Cara Landry being new to Denton Elementary. The worse thing about it is that her teacher Mr. Larson would rather The worse thing about it is that her teacher Mr. read than teach. So Cara decided to give him something else to read. She then made up the Landry News. When everyone knew about it the whole fifth grade was reading it. This book still inspires us to create our own classroom newspaper. We will have an issue every month. We hope you enjoy reading it.
Ms. Hancock's class had so much fun participating in their PowWow and creating their Native American Projects!

ROOM 31 POLICIES AND PRACTICES:
ROOM 31 HOMEWORK POLICY
I believe that homework is necessary for practicing skills that have been learned for enriching the classroom experience. Skills taught need to be applied in different environments. It requires time management and responsibility. Please set up a time and a quiet place (each day) for your child to come home and do their homework. Classroom homework will be given Monday through Thursday night each week. I will not assign classroom homework over the weekends. Timeline for homework will be an average of 45 minutes a night (depending on your child’s abilities). After an hour if your child still has not completed their homework, let them enjoy the rest of the night and then turn in what they did complete the next day. (Work should reflect some attempt of trying with the assignments.)
Students will be given a homework grade based on whether or not homework is completed. Students who have completed all homework will receive an “O” for outstanding that week. Those who do not complete all assignments will be graded accordingly. Homework grades will count toward the final nine week’s grade.
If an emergency happens and your child is unable to do their homework that night, all you have to do is write me a note and send it with your child the next day.
Students that do not turn in their homework will have their first recess taken away and complete their work then. Homework will be checked during school and not returned.
ROOM 31 WEEKLY PROGRESS REPORTS
I want to inform you of your child’s progress each week so a weekly progress report will go home every Friday for you to view. With this report you will have four graded papers your child did that week. It will be a Spelling Test, a Reading/ Comprehension Test, a Language Arts Test, and a Math Test. These tests do not have to be returned on Monday, but I would like the progress report returned with your signature to make sure you saw it. If your child does not bring back the report on Monday, it will be considered like homework and they will have to miss their first recess. If you lose the report over the weekend…….just send a note saying you saw it. We need to be in contact with each other each week and this is one way to do so! Thanks for your cooperation with this matter….it is the easiest way to communicate with each other.
CLASS PARTIES
We will have 3 holiday parties this year. They will be at Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and at the end of the year. I will send a note home prior to these parties to ask for your assistance in sending a snack (HAS TO BE WRAPPED) to share with the class. You are always welcomed to come and join us for a fun time during our class parties.
DO YOU WANT TO COME AND HELP IN THE CLASSROOM? GREAT!
If you would like to help out in the classroom, you may do so on Friday mornings from 8:30 to 10:30. I ask parents not to come during the other school days because it interrupts classroom instruction and students need to FOCUS on my instruction and get their work completed. People in and out of the classroom breaks their concentration and I want to provide them with a successful learning environment. Thanks for your cooperation on this matter.
FIELD TRIPS
In order for your child to attend a field trip, you must complete the entire Field Trip Permission Sheet and return it to school. This is required by State and District law. You can not call or send another note saying it is okay. We must have the original form!
If your child consistently does not behave in class nor complete homework, class work, or GATE Projects they will not be allowed to attend that field trip. If this unfortunately happens, you will get a note on the Field Trip Permission Sheet stating why they can not be able to attend that trip. Let’s not let this happen! Let’s work on having a great year by all doing our part to succeed.
