From the Desk of Mrs. Lopez...
Our winter holiday is coming soon and many families will take time to visit out of town. Remember, if your child will miss more than five days you can sign for an Independent Study Packet and when it is completed after your trip, yor child will receive credit for being in school. It's like you were never gone! Otherwise, these trips are counted by the district as unexcused and truancy letters will be sent out. If a child misses too many days, we are required to drop them and you will have to re-enroll them when you come back.
Our students at Bessie Owens are doing well and more students are reading at home to earn a Gold Medal at the end of the semester. My Kinder students should know the entire alphabet and letter sounds by the beginning of January. First graders are working on reading at least 35 words a minute by the end of January. Please work on these skills at home with your children. Remember that reading in any language develops their understanding, so don't hesitate to read to them whenever possible.
In Math we have the following goals for students to earn a Math Master Medal:
-
Kindergarten: Recognize numbers to 100
-
First grade: Addition facts to 20
-
Second grade: Addition and Subtraction facts to 20
-
Third grade: Multiplication and Division facts 1-10
If you are traveling this season, play games in the car reading signs or practicing math facts. Learning is fun when it becomes a game. I hope you all have a safe and happy holiday season.
Keep our motto in mind as you work with your children at home:
BELONG, BELIEVE, ACHIEVE.
Thank you again for participating in the education of our Owens Primary students. Have a blessed holiday season.
